The Lone Volt

Description

What is it?

The Lone Volt is a walk-up and counter-service energy drink bar built around on-tap energy drinks — house-recipe and partner formulas on draft, poured fresh over ice or mixed to order at the bar. Customers build custom blends from sugar-free bases, natural caffeine sources, and functional add-ins — including optional creatine scoops — with caffeine content shown in milligrams on every cup.

We also stock a diverse bottled energy program: mainstream favorites, zero-sugar lines, and imported cans you won't find at a typical gas station — Japanese, Korean, European, and Latin American brands alongside domestic craft options. A protein bar rack at the counter captures gym and WFH grab-and-go traffic. Grab a can from the cooler on the way out, or stay for a draft pour and a custom build.

Unlike generic coffee shops or convenience stores, we own the full energy niche — on-tap + made-to-order + curated retail under one roof for students, work-from-home customers, gamers, and gym-goers who want a third place between home and the office.

Competitive Landscape

Who already owns the caffeine in DFW — and what similar concepts prove the model elsewhere.

BrandTypeEnergy / custom offerThreatGap for The Lone Volt
7 Brew Drive-thru chain 7 Energy (original + sugar-free), 20K+ flavor combos; Coit Rd, Frisco, Carrollton, FW High Car-only, no lounge; energy is one line item, not the whole brand
Swig Dirty-soda chain Reviver energy + dirty sodas; Coppell, Carrollton, McKinney, Hurst, FW, Garland+ High Soda-first identity; limited gaming / energy-bar culture
Dutch Bros Drive-thru chain Rebel energy drinks (iced/blended); Mockingbird, Frisco, Plano, DeSoto High Drive-thru only; no mg transparency or functional add-ins
Leaf Café Wellness café Custom energy refreshers, CBD/kava add-ins; Downtown McKinney Med Wellness/kava focus, not youth/gaming; single location

Feng Cha Boba franchise Milk tea, fruit tea, coffee; Richardson HQ, 15+ DFW units Med Tea/boba core; energy is incidental, not customizable bar

Ellianos Coffee Southeast (85+ stores) Build-your-own energy — Lotus / Red Bull base, 30K+ combos Shows franchise scale potential for custom energy menus
Lola Beans Multi-state franchise Drive-thru coffee, energy, infused teas, Lola Colas — heavy customization Similar frequency model (2 visits/day); energy as core category

Where The Lone Volt wins

No DFW player owns energy-first + in-store lounge + transparent caffeine (mg) + gaming/fitness culture in one concept. Drive-thru chains (7 Brew, Dutch Bros, Swig) win on convenience; Leaf Café wins on wellness; boba shops win on tea. The Lone Volt sits in the gap: a dedicated energy bar with custom builds, on-tap pours, and a scene — not a coffee shop with energy on the side.

Is food required?

Energy shop — No. The Lone Volt needs a city food-establishment permit because of custom beverage prep (ice, bases, blending), but Texas and DFW rules do not require a kitchen or entrees. Bottled/import cans are prepackaged retail. Optional prepackaged snacks (chips, protein bars) add ticket size without a grease trap or hot kitchen.

Coffee shop — No. Beverage-only coffee is allowed under a standard food-service permit. Pastries and sandwiches are optional for revenue; a full kitchen is a choice, not a license requirement (unless you add alcohol).

Bar — Yes. Texas TABC generally requires real food service with a mixed beverage permit: commercial cooking equipment, multiple entrees, and food available whenever alcohol is served. Prepackaged snacks alone do not count. Dallas/Frisco zoning also treats 75%+ alcohol revenue as a bar use, not a restaurant.

Full food requirements breakdown ↗

Energy shop

Profitability

  • Higher ticket + 65–75% margin
  • Afternoon daypart fits gym + gaming traffic
  • Unproven category — no benchmark comps
  • Frequency still being validated

Cost

  • No TABC fees or dram shop insurance
  • Equipment below full espresso/bar build
  • Lounge build-out + ice program add cost
  • ~$242K mid-case per Lone Volt model

Setup

  • Same zoning path as coffee (restaurant use)
  • No age verification or liquor overlay
  • Must explain novel use to planners/landlords
  • Novel category may need extra planner education

Coffee shop

Profitability

  • Proven daily habit — repeat AM traffic
  • Office corridors = steady lunch volume
  • Lower ticket ($5–8) caps revenue
  • DFW oversaturated — margin pressure

Cost

  • Can start beverage-only, lower food cost
  • Used espresso gear widely available
  • Espresso machine $8K–25K+
  • Franchise fees if not independent

Setup

  • Landlords & health dept understand the use
  • Fastest CO / permit path of the three
  • Hard to differentiate in crowded market
  • Weak afternoon unless hybrid model

Alcohol bar

Profitability

  • Highest $/drink and tip income
  • Strong entertainment corridors (Deep Ellum)
  • 75% alcohol rule — limits food revenue mix
  • Volatile; seasonality & liability risk

Cost

  • Alcohol inventory turns fast on busy nights
  • Can reuse existing bar build-out shells
  • TABC, higher insurance, security staffing
  • Est. $350–550K+ startup typical

Setup

  • Entertainment districts expect bar tenants
  • Existing SUP shells available in Deep Ellum
  • SUP/CUP + liquor overlay + TABC timeline
  • Noise/security conditions on permits

Recommended: Operate as restaurant without drive-in — same bucket as coffee, not a bar. Avoid alcohol unless ready for rezoning + TABC.

Marketing — Find Partners

How to build the list

  1. Drop a 3-mile pin on Google Maps — search each category above.
  2. Save prospects to a shared sheet: name, contact, distance, fit score (1–5).
  3. Walk the corridor — note flyer boards, partner windows, busy hours.
  4. Join local Discords and Facebook groups (DFW gaming, fitness deals).
  5. DM or walk-in with one clear ask: counter flyers + member code, not a long pitch deck.

Launch-week targets

5 student / campus touchpoints · 5 WFH / coworking partners · 5 gym partnerships · 3 gaming venues · 1 anchor event (tournament or campus tabling).

Prioritize partners within walking distance of Deep Ellum, West 7th, or your signed lease — density beats reach at opening.
